Treating students like mental athletes: a playbook for classroom success

This playbook, Treating Students like Mental Athletes: A Playbook for Classroom Success, aims to provide educators and school administrators with actionable strategies to begin fostering a culture of excellence and resilience in the classroom. To this end, it provides strategies for the “teacher as coach” approach to classroom planning in addition to the traditional “best practice” approaches to content delivery and assessment.

This playbook delves into critical aspects of the holistic approach of “teaching the whole student,” drawing parallels between the discipline of athletic training and the academic rigor required for student success.

Educational Directions Impact

In one partner school district, Educational Directions worked with several schools during the 2021 – 2022 school year.  The results speak for themselves.  Let’s talk about how we can partner with your schools to improve student performance.

50% of Title 1 schools in that county with 2021 – 2022 gains in total points were schools partnering with Educational Directions for coaching services.

Our Customizable Services Include

Academic Consulting

An academic review is a snapshot review of a school/district in operation by a set of observers from outside the school – observers who have been trained to collect, organize, and interpret a variety of data streams.

Curricula Reviews

We have developed an approach to curricula reviews that emphasizes the student focus of the Ed Directions approach to student work.

Professional Development

Our main professional development series, The Rhythm of the Learner Year, is our most popular series, especially when supporting a school entering one of our intervention levels. In some cases, districts have needed additional professional development.

Our professional development courses are customized to meet the needs of the specific district or region with which we are working. There is no one-size-fits-all set of professional development sessions that we would use district-to-district or state-to-state.

Leadership Training

Based on the results from our academic review, we tailor a professional development curriculum that not only supports teachers, but also a session on how academic leadership (superintendents, principals, administrators, etc.) can properly support teachers that are on the front lines of dealing with the issues that come to light.

Sessions will prepare participants with strategies to implement changes in culture, climate, work ethic, and data management.

Testimonials from Past Partnerships

Success Through Coordinated Planning

Within two years of beginning our work with Educational Directions our school was no longer in Turnaround status and our school grade improved 149 points. Our work with Educational Directions not only helped us improve our school grade but guided us to create sustainable change within our school and develop a school culture focused on continuous improvement and growth for our students.
Britt Gross
Principal - Lake Alfred PolyTech Academy
My partnership with Educational Directions was an extraordinary experience during one of the most challenging opportunities of my professional career ... By partnering with Educational Directions our school experienced a complete turnaround. Our student learning gains, as measured by student test results, were the second highest in our district. Thus, ending our turnaround status with the state. In addition, the school has consistently maintained this improved status.
Julie Grice
Retired Principal - Florida

Our coaches average over 35 years of service to education and over 15 years of experience with Educational Directions.

As result, Ed Directions has perhaps the strongest staff of any educational company today. Our educators are passionate about education and helping schools, and the students always come first.

The size of our company and our team being made up of lifelong learners is incredibly important to the customization of data collection tools, the administration of a multi-year study, and the planning and corresponding professional development targeted directly from information gathered from the trend analysis.
