School Systems Review Toolkit – Culture Indicators Self-Evaluation

The last activity of an Educational Directions leadership workshop is the development of a plan for opening school. For our leadership coaches, a primary goal is to market to staff a vision of a successful opening of school and then prepare staff to actualize that vision. Staff must focus on opening school with strategies in place to enable all students to be successful (knowing what success means, having access to support, and highly engaged and effective attending and acquiring work).

It also means staff must spend time fine-tuning all systems — management and academic. Nothing good happens when systems fail during the opening of school. Facilities, technologies, and materials (both teacher and student) need to be ready for use. Data management, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities need to be designed, staffed, and scheduled. The goal is to make sure the school is ready for the students’ arrival.

The free tools provided on this site are pulled, in part, from our recent book Turning Around Turnaround Schools, Volume 2 – Embracing the Rhythm of the Learner Year. If you have questions about how to use any of these tools, please feel free to contact us, or check out the book, available on amazon.com.
