In the first half of the Formative Period, our focus is on building the learner as well as learning the content. If we want to get maximum growth, we have to begin the Formative Period by preparing the learner with the skills and strategies they need to be effective learners. In most cases, this involves using directed work that shapes all students’ perception of what the work is for, how the work is done, and the level of effort engagement required to do it proficiently.
